CHENANGO COUNTY SHERIFFS

Under the first constitution of New York State, Sheriffs were appointed annually by the council of appointments. No person could hold the office for more than four successive years and must be a taxpayer. This was for the period from 1777 to 1821.

Under the second Constitution for the period from 1821 to 1846, Sheriffs were elected to a term of three years and ineligible to election the next succeeding term.

The first Sheriff of Chenango County was Uri Tracy of Oxford, NY

appointed March 22, 1798.
